The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is a Group 1 1400-metre race that is run annually at Caulfield in late September. Run under handicap conditions, the race can unearth up-and-coming champion sprinters, with Testa Rossa a notable winner of back-to-back races in 1999 and 2000.
The 2022 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes will be run on Saturday 17th September with a total prize pool of $1,000,000.
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes History
Originally named the Invitation Stakes, the race has had many name changes, with the change to Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes after the former chairman of the VATC occurring in 2006. The race is often used to launch the Spring carnival for staying horses who are looking towards the Cups and Cox Plate with shrewd punters identifying and “black booking” good runs with an eye to the future. Horses that make up good ground late in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes are expected to have a successful Spring Carnival.
The 1400m distance provides race-fit sprinters with a chance to step up from 1200m in search of a Group 1 win while the quality stayers who are heading onto the lucrative distance races can perform well first up. It is a fantastic race!
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Past Winners
The race has a rich history with a number of superstar winners including SANTA ANA LANE, TESTA ROSSA and MANIKATO. Leading jockey Craig Williams has ridden the winner six times since 2005 with his last win on BEHEMOTH in 2020. Williams knows what it takes to win the race and anything he rides must be respected.
Overseas horses have targeted the race in the years prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. JUNGLE CAT for the massive Godolphin racing operation enjoyed a “hit and run” visit to Australia in 2018 to win the race with 58kgs. It would pay to follow the Blue Army visitors into the future.
Placing A Bet On The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
There are a number of key performance indicators for punters to consider before placing a bet on the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2022.
Only two horses have carried 58kgs or more to win the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in the last 20 years. They are the huge horse BEHEMOTH and Godolphin overseas raider JUNGLE CAT. Bettors should tread wearily with those horses at the top of the weights. The same can be said for 3yos with EXCEED AND EXCEL the last 3yo to win the race back in 2003.
The majority of recent Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winners have finished in the top four in their lead-up race which is key when assessing the form. While the barrier draw has been insignificant in recent years with half of the last 30 winners jumping from a double-digit gate. The best horses can win from anywhere!
