According to the traditional definition of adverb it is a word that modifies or adds to the verb but it has a lot more to uncover. In fact, adverb do modifies a verb but it also the modifier of an adjective, another adverb and a preposition. Apart from these it is also used to modify a phrase, a clause or a sentence which expresses some relation of manner or quality, place. Time, degree, number, cause, opposition, affirmation, or denial. Other than modifying adverbs’ purpose is to restrict or limit the meaning of a verb.’
Adverbs restrict the verbs, adverbs, English adjectives starting with letter R, prepositions or a phrase, a clause, and even sentences by answering the question when, where, how, how much, how long or how often. For instance; my daughter calls me regularly, here the word or adverb regularly refers to how often my daughter visits me. Similarly, there are other such examples of adverbs such as; they are happily married, here the word happily indicates affirmation that they are married and they are happy as well.
The common identification of adverbs is that they end with “ly” and are formed by adding “ly to the adjectives for instance; bold-boldly, interesting-interestingly, heavy-heavily. However this isn’t always the case, there are other adverbs that doesn’t end with “ly” for instance; again, also, just, never, often, soon, today, too, very, and well.
Conjunctive Adverbs in English Language:
Conjunctive adverbs as the name implies acts as a conjunction in English language, it is used to bind two clauses or two sentences or sentences together. For instance; I went to the store to buy new suits. However, the store was already closed when I got there. As we can witness that the word “however” connects the two sentences before and after it. Here’s another good example of conjunctive adverbs in a sentence “Sweets isn’t a healthy breakfast. Instead, you could eat fruit. Here the word “instead” is performing the function of a connector.
Adverbs of Frequency in English Language:
Adverbs of frequency in English language determines that how often something happens. It would be boring to use the exact times something happens and to be very frank we wouldn’t definitely remember that. So we use certain adverbs that gives us an idea or an estimation of when something happens or happened. For instance; I usually put mayonnaise and chocolate syrup on my pancakes. Similarly, another example of adverb of frequency is “she never drives on icy roads”
Adverb of Time in English Language:
As the name implies adverb of time refer to when something happens, they refer to specific times in fact time period. For instance; we are going to see a movie tomorrow, the word tomorrow predicts that we are going to see a movies on the day after. Another example of adverb of time is “recently, Trevor got a job as a construction worker”.
Adverb of Manner in English Language:
Adverb of manner refers to the reason or the cause, it tells us actually how something happens. Moreover, many of the adverbs ending with “ly” adverbs fall into this category. For instance; he bravely faced the situation or Sam wisely took an extra umbrella with her. Some more “ly” adverbs are angrily, cautiously, hungrily, nicely, slowly etc.
Adverb of Degree in English Language
Adverb of degree are used as intensifiers of an action or quality, in fact they describe the degree or intensity of the adjectives or adverbs. For instance; he barely know how to write. Here the word “barely” implies that he doesn’t know how to cook. Similarly, in the sentence “it is really cold outside” the word “really” implies that it is extremely cold outside.
Adverb of Place in English Language:
Adverb of place refers to the place where something has happened. For instance; I can’t find my shoes anywhere, here the word anywhere points to the place where he doesn’t find his shoes. Similarly, in the sentence “the lost travelers went north until they found a small town” possess the adverb “north” which is referring to a direction.
To conclude, learning these adverbs is like learning how to play baseball all you need to do is to identify the right place to hit.
